Description
Las Grietas is formed by lava fissures that form two giant walls crossed by an arm of brackish water filtered from the upper part where it mixes with sea water.1
Las Grietas has two types of water: the superficial, fresh water that arrives through filtration and the deeper, salty sea water. The mixture of the two is called brackish water and is what is used for consumption in Puerto Ayora.1 Thanks to its transparent waters, it is a popular area among bathers and diving enthusiasts. Between June and December the water level is lower because it is the dry season and the water is colder (18-20 °C). Between January and May the water level is higher thanks to the rain and warmer (24-29 °C).
